
Cell Case #22
This Cell Case presents a 62-year old man that was sent to a hematology department because of abnormal findings; macrocytic anemia and thrombocytopenia in combination with a slight leukocyte elevation.
The cells looked like this- note the mixture of small and normal-sized abnormal cell types.
What do you think is the most likely diagnosis? Please post your suggestion!

This is Linda from South County Hospital. We met at a site visit with Dale at your facility back in Sept. I was surprised to see a familier name on this blog!!!
Wanted to let you know that we did get the XN2000 and CellaVision, with the WAM middleware but no slide stainer. Hope you are doing well.
Anyway, I think these are all Myeloblasts of various sizes. There is an auer rod in the top left image.

An Auer rod in the top left cell makes it a myeloblast. As to the overall diagnosis, probable AML but a wider view would identify whether it is AML or another pathology presenting with myeloblasts e. g. MDS.

I think there is an Auer rod in the top left cell and some barely perceptible granules in the top right cell, which would make the diagnosis AML or high grade MDS
